Good swimwear asks a little more care than an ordinary T-shirt, but the routine does not need to be complicated. A few small habits can help protect stretch, colour and fit, particularly when a piece is worn frequently.

Performance fabrics are designed to move with the body and recover their shape. Heat, harsh detergents, rough surfaces and prolonged exposure to residues can all work against that performance over time. The gentler the routine, the better chance the fabric has to keep doing what it was made to do.

Rinse as soon as you can

After wear, rinse swimwear in cool, clean water as soon as practical. This helps remove chlorine, salt, sunscreen, body oils and other residues before they sit in the fibres for hours.

You do not need an elaborate ritual. A thorough cool rinse is one of the simplest and most useful things you can do, especially on days when the swimsuit will be worn again soon.

Hand wash gently

When a fuller wash is needed, use cool or lukewarm water with a small amount of gentle detergent. Avoid bleach and aggressive stain treatments. Let the fabric move through the water rather than scrubbing, twisting or wringing it.

The Kaia Swim One Piece is made from premium European performance fabric with UV protection and enhanced resistance to chlorine, sunscreen and oils. Even with a resilient fabric, careful washing remains worthwhile because it protects not only the fibres but also the shape, lace detail and construction of the finished piece.

Do not wring the fabric

Twisting a wet swimsuit may seem like the fastest way to remove water, but it can put unnecessary stress on stretch fibres and seams. Instead, gently press out excess water between your hands or place the piece flat inside a clean towel and press lightly.

Dry away from direct heat

Lay swimwear flat to dry in a well-ventilated place away from radiators, tumble dryers and prolonged direct heat. High temperatures can be hard on elastic fibres, while hanging a very wet piece can allow its own weight to pull at the shape.

Flat drying also helps more structured silhouettes retain their intended line. The Liora Swim One Piece, for example, is designed around a clean square neckline and a supportive, adjustable fit, details worth preserving through gentle handling.

Alternate pieces when possible

If you wear swimwear frequently, rotating between two pieces gives the fibres time to dry fully and recover between wears. This is particularly useful on longer trips when the instinct is to rinse one swimsuit at night and put it straight back on the following morning.

A small rotation can also make packing feel more considered: one cleaner, more architectural shape and one more expressive option can cover most needs without carrying an entire drawer.

Be mindful of rough surfaces

Stone edges, textured pool surrounds, timber benches and rough paving can catch or abrade smooth stretch fabrics. Place a towel beneath you where possible rather than sitting directly on a coarse surface.

This sounds obvious, but abrasion is one of those forms of wear that can happen in seconds and cannot be reversed by careful washing later.

Apply sunscreen before dressing

Where practical, apply sunscreen and allow it to absorb before putting on swimwear. This reduces the amount transferred directly onto the fabric. If sunscreen does mark the piece, rinse and wash gently rather than reaching immediately for a harsh stain remover.

Store only when completely dry

Never fold damp swimwear into a drawer or sealed bag for long-term storage. Make sure it is fully dry, then fold rather than stretch it over a hanger. Store somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.

If a piece includes ruffles, lace or sculptural details, give those elements a little room rather than compressing them beneath heavier garments.

What about the washing machine?

Always follow the care label supplied with the individual garment first. If hand washing is recommended, treat that as the safest route. Machine cycles vary enormously in temperature and agitation, so a routine that seems gentle for everyday clothing may be unnecessarily hard on a swimsuit.

Why care matters

Looking after clothing is one of the quietest ways to make a wardrobe more intentional. A well-made piece should not feel disposable after one season. Care gives fabric and construction the opportunity to last as they were intended to.

RIVE & RITUEL pieces are created with premium European performance fabrics chosen for stretch, coverage, shape retention and repeated wear. The Solea Swim One Piece combines that performance with a sculptural ruffle and gentle compression, making careful maintenance particularly worthwhile.

The formula is wonderfully unglamorous: rinse promptly, wash gently, avoid heat, dry fully and store with care. Small actions, repeated over time, make the difference.
